Sigiriya, also known as Lion Rock, is one of South Asia's most remarkable archaeological sites and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982. The 169 km drive from Colombo Airport takes you through Sri Lanka's cultural heartland, passing through Kurunegala and Dambulla before arriving at the ancient rock fortress that rises 200 metres above the surrounding jungle.
The journey offers an excellent opportunity to stop at the Dambulla Cave Temple (Golden Temple), located midway along the route. This complex of five cave temples contains over 150 Buddha statues and ceiling paintings dating back to the 1st century BC. The stop adds approximately 45 minutes to your journey and is included free of charge when you book with us.
King Kashyapa built his palace atop Sigiriya in the 5th century AD, and the climb involves ascending 1,200 steps past the famous mirror wall, the frescoes of the Sigiriya Maidens, and the Lion's Paw entrance. We recommend arriving early morning to beat the heat and crowds. Our drivers will drop you at the entrance and wait in the shaded car park for your return.
The area around Sigiriya offers excellent safari opportunities. Minneriya National Park hosts "The Gathering" between July and October, when hundreds of wild elephants congregate around the reservoir. Kaudulla and Hurulu Eco Park are equally impressive alternatives. We can arrange half-day safari excursions as add-ons to your transfer booking.
