Colombo Airport Arrival Guide for Tourists: Pickup, SIM Cards, Money Exchange and Transfers
What happens after you land at Colombo Airport?
Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB) is the main arrival point for most tourists visiting Sri Lanka. After immigration, baggage collection, and customs, you enter the public arrivals area where private drivers, hotel representatives, SIM counters, and currency exchange desks are usually located.
For a pre-booked airport transfer, the easiest arrangement is to share your flight number, passenger name, destination hotel, and WhatsApp number before arrival. The driver can then monitor delays and wait with the confirmed booking details.
Where does the airport transfer driver wait?
Most private transfer drivers wait in the public arrivals area after customs. The safest instruction is simple: walk out after collecting luggage, look for the name board or driver message, and keep WhatsApp connected if possible.
If the arrivals area is busy, stay near the meeting point agreed in your booking message. Do not leave the terminal with an unknown driver who cannot confirm your route, passenger name, and destination.
Should you buy a SIM card before leaving CMB?
Many tourists buy a local SIM at the airport because it helps with WhatsApp, maps, hotel coordination, and driver calls. If you already have roaming or an eSIM, you can move directly to pickup. If your transfer is late at night, decide before arrival whether you want to stop for a SIM or go straight to the hotel.
Cash, cards and transfer payment
Airport exchange counters are convenient for small arrival cash needs. For transfer payment, confirm before booking whether you will pay online, by card, in USD/EUR/GBP/LKR cash, or through an agreed local method.
The important point is price clarity. A fixed private transfer should confirm the route, vehicle, pickup time, and fare before you leave the terminal.
How long should pickup take?
Immigration and luggage timing varies by flight. A normal pickup plan should allow time for baggage, a restroom stop, and a quick SIM or exchange counter stop if needed. For long routes like Colombo Airport to Galle, Kandy, Ella, or Sigiriya, it is better to leave the airport calmly than rush into the road tired.
Best first-night transfer choices
If you land late, Negombo is the shortest beach-area transfer. Colombo is practical for business hotels. Galle, Kandy, Sigiriya, Ella, Yala, and east-coast routes are longer and should be booked with the right vehicle for luggage and comfort.
