A Family Reunion at 4AM
When the Thompson family of six planned their first trip to Sri Lanka, the biggest worry was not the 12-hour flight from London Heathrow. It was what would happen when they landed at Bandaranaike International Airport at 4:15 AM with four exhausted children, eight suitcases, and a stroller.
Their driver Nimal had been tracking flight UL504 since it left London. When the SriLankan Airlines A330 touched down 20 minutes late, he was already positioned at the arrivals hall exit with a printed name board reading "Thompson Family - Welcome to Sri Lanka." Inside the Toyota HiAce luxury van, two child seats were pre-installed in Isofix mounts, the air conditioning was running, and six bottles of chilled water were waiting in the door pockets.
The luggage took 45 minutes to arrive, a delay that would have caused panic with a regular taxi. But Nimal waited patiently, helping load all eight bags into the spacious rear compartment. By 5:20 AM, the Thompson family was on the Katunayake Expressway, children already dozing off in their child seats, heading to their Negombo beachfront hotel just 15 minutes away.
Mrs. Thompson later wrote in her review: "Nimal turned what could have been the most stressful part of our holiday into the smoothest. The children were asleep before we left the airport road. This is what professional service looks like." The family went on to book Nimal for three more transfers during their two-week stay, including a day trip to Sigiriya and their return airport transfer.
